Enlarge My Border

Click to download a printable (pdf) copy.

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request. (1 Chronicles 4.9-10)

Welcome When was the last time you did something you have never done before? How did it make you feel?
Worship As a group, offer praise to God by calling him different things using every letter of the Bible! For example, God you are Amazing!, God you are Beautiful, God you are Compassionate. There may be more than one word for each letter so use them all. When you get to Q, X and Z, you will have to be imaginative.
Word

Read together acts 2:37-47.

vv 37-42 What was the ‘this’ that they had heard?
What do you think ‘cut to the heart’ means?
What did they have to do? 3,000 is a lot of people. Can you imagine that?
What did they do and why?
vv 43-47 What do you understand by ‘awe’ and ‘signs and wonders’?
What characterised them as believers?
What do you understand by ‘having the goodwill of the people’?

Other questions:

The best sermons are those which make us say ‘what should we do?’ Discuss.
When we turn to Christ, is it our response or His calling or both?
What are the differences and the similarities between this church and our church?
Did they seek growth or was it a natural by-product of their other activities?
What is the connection between our re-ordering project and growth as a church, do you think?
Do you pray that God will increase your responsibility/extend your influence?
If not, why not and how can you start to think differently?

Witness Think of your influence as a group on those outside of the group and ask yourself what you could do to ‘enlarge your border’. Think of something practical, just one thing and then do it!
