  Objections to Christianity
4. The Bible Cannot be Trusted
Welcome

Tell the test of the group which is your favourite Bible passage/story and why?

Worship

It is a good opportunity to allow God to speak to us as he does all the time. Choose some objects (one for each member of the group) from around your house and hand them out. Then ask each member to focus on their object and allow God to speak to them. Say a prayer to this effect. After a period of silence, allow each member to say what it was God was saying to them through their object.

Read Psalm 19 together and turn its words into your own prayers of thanks and praise for the ways in which he speaks to us and especially through his word.

Word

Read together 2 Timothy 3:10-17

vv 10-13: suffering for the faith
Also read Acts 13:44-14:20 to discover the events Paul is referring to.
Why did they oppose Paul and his companions in this way?
Why do people have violent reactions to Christians today?
If we don't feel persecuted for our faith, is there something wrong?

vv 14-15: continuing in what you were taught
Timothy's mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, were Christians.
What did Paul instruct Timothy to do and why?
What does Paul mean by this?
What is the ultimate purpose of the Bible according to Paul?
What is the relationship between the word of God and Jesus, the Word (John 1:1)?
How did Jesus see this relationship?

v16: equipped for every good work
What is the origin of the Bible according to Paul?
What are the four uses of the Bible mentioned in this verse? Explore the meaning of each use and what it means for us.

Conclusion: Ask the group to share their difficulties about the Bible. This might be reading it, understanding it, applying it to their lives etc. The aim is to increase their confidence in it as a foundation for their faith. It may be that group members can help each other with difficulties from their own personal experience.

Witness

The next time someone says to you: 'The Bible can't be trusted', how will you respond?

As a result of this study, what do you plan to do with the Bible personally?
