Homegroup Leaders' Notes for 14 May 2006
  2: Encourage one Another
Aim To challenge ourselves by studying what the Bible has to say about how we should love one another in practice. We will do this over several weeks using passages of scripture containing the words one another.
Welcome In one or two words, how would you describe the relationship you had with your brothers and sisters when you were growing up? Who has been as close to you as a brother or sister?
Worship Read Psalm 136:1-9 with call and response ie somebody saying the first part of the verse and everybody else responding with "His love is eternal". Then pray openly short prayers of thanks to God. You could finish the time of worship by saying "Give thanks to the God of heaven his love is eternal."
Word

'And so encourage one another and help one another. [1 Thessalonians 5:11]

How important is it to encourage people and what different ways can you think of helping people to feel part of our church?

Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns and sacred songs: sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your heart. [Ephesians 5:19]

How conscious are we of God and our fellow worshippers when we sing hymns and praises in church? Share about an occasion when somebody has passed on a word of scripture or a word that God has for you?

Read Ezra 3:10-13

There were many different people working together in an organised way to lay the foundation of the temple.

1) What difference do you think it made that the priests worshipped God and remembered his goodness on this occasion?

2) How can praising God together make our life together more meaningful and effective? How can we encourage each other when things are difficult?

3) Do we sometimes need to be resolute in the face of criticism from those who seem to be thinking more about their own needs than the needs of others?

4) How can we help one another to show love and do good? (Hebrews 10:24)

Witness Pray that as a group you may be able to find a way to do something different together in the summer months. Pray that you will be able to ask others to join you and that your encouragement for each other will make your witness stronger.
