St Luke’s Church Great Crosby
Grounds Project

“to create a place of beauty and a haven for people and wildlife

5 Publicity and awards

We have developed good links with our local paper, the Crosby Herald. They have reported on various aspects of our work in the grounds on nine occasions since November 2006. This has included supporting our initial bid for Lottery funding, reporting on our wildlife activity mornings, and the carving of the eagle in our community garden.

The grounds’ project has also won a number of awards. In September 2007 we won the Unilever Dragonfly award under the category of ‘best new environmental volunteers’. This was a generous cheque together with a beautiful painting of a dragonfly and pond scene made from recycled glass.

Some of our group were interviewed (link to audio blog) about our project after the presentation.

In February 2008 we were shortlisted for the Groundwork Merseyside Environmental Awards at a ceremony held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Green Pennant Award

Then in July 2008 we were awarded the Green Pennant Award. This is a national award that recognises high quality green spaces in England and Wales that are managed by voluntary and community groups. It is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces. The Green Pennant Award is run by Keep Britan Tidy. The green space is visited by a judge who checks to see if the site meets a range of criteria. This was a great encouragement for the ‘grounds’ team’ which has worked extremely hard to ensure that the site is managed and maintained to a high standard.

In 2009, we again won the Green Pennant award. We also won 'best community garden' and a discretionary award as part of 'Sefton in Bloom'.
