St Luke’s Church Great Crosby
Grounds Project

“to create a place of beauty and a haven for people and wildlife

2 Transforming the Grounds

There have been 3 distinct phases of our project to transform our grounds:

Phase 1 was made possible by our success in bidding for £10,000 as part of the ‘Breathing Places’ initiative in June 2007. This enabled us to create a community garden, re-lay a main path within the graveyard and plant thousands of bulbs. This was completed by June 2008.

… and at the end of September 2008

By now our ‘groundforce’ team was keen to do more! We were able to move on to Phase 2 with the help of funding from a variety of sources including St Luke’s church itself, Express Sefton! and the Big Lottery’s ‘Awards for All’ programme. These works took place in 2009 and the first part of 2010.

The opportunity came up to apply for a major grant of up to £50,000 as part of Big Lottery’s ‘Changing Spaces’ initiative. We heard in September 2010 that our Stage 1 application was successful. A facilitator was appointed to help us develop Stage 2, and we got the thumbs-up in July 2011. Phase 3 started in October 2011 and we hope that by spring 2012 we will be well on our way to fulfilling our vision of “creating a place of beauty and a haven for people and wildlife”.
