St Luke’s Church Great Crosby
Grounds Project
“to create a place of beauty and a haven for people and wildlife”
2 The project
The main part of our bid was for a community garden, making paths suitable for wheelchair users, and planting bulbs, shrubs and trees. In May 2007 we received the full amount we applied for - just under £10,000 – with a year to spend it.
Before hearing about our bid we planted shrubs along a number of boundaries, held a wildlife activity morning in March and prepared a management plan (available as a 350kB pdf file).
In August we commissioned an ecologist’s report – the key suggestions were to manage different parts of the graveyard in different ways to encourage a range of plants. In September – November we planted about 9,000 bulbs all over the church grounds.
Work on the community garden began at the end of January 2008. The garden was constructed during February and March and was planted in May. By the end of the summer it had become well established.

The final part of the Lottery funded project was to re-lay a 100 metre path through the graveyard so that it is suitable for wheelchair users.
