Breathing Places award
June 2007

The parishioners at St Luke’s are delighted to hear that they have been awarded almost £10,000 funding for improvements to their church grounds. This is part of a joint initiative between the Big Lottery and the BBC known as ‘Breathing Places’. This aims to encourage communities to improve spaces for the benefit of local people and wildlife.

The plans for St Luke’s include planting wildflower meadows and widening paths in the graveyard so they are suitable for people in wheelchairs. But the big project will be a new community garden. This will be a place where visitors to the graveyard can stop and reflect. It will also provide a hideaway next to the centre of Crosby for shop and office workers to relax during their lunch break, and a quiet haven where local residents can relax and observe wildlife.

There was so much enthusiasm for the idea of St Luke’s grounds becoming a Breathing Place that work is already underway. Pupils from St Luke’s Junior School and Crosby High School, together with Mencap, planted shrubs along the boundaries of the graveyard early in the year. This was followed by a butterfly garden, created during a successful wildlife activity morning in March.

Sefton Leisure Department were impressed with how the local community were involved and invited St Luke’s to enter Crosby in Bloom. Al ages are doing their bit. Members of the Pram Club planted a bedding scheme to try and catch the eye of the judges when they visit ion 10th July.

Steve Matthews, project organiser, said ‘This is wonderful news not only for the St Luke’s church family, but for the community of Crosby and for wildlife’. .Steve would love to hear from anyone with ideas for the new garden. You can contact him via the parish office.
